In the far off future of 1999, a giant alien space craft crashes into South Ataria Island. Over the next ten years, humans reverse engineer the ship advancing technology by leaps and boundes. The repaired craft is dubbed the SDF-1 Macross. On the day of its maiden voyage, an alien race known as the Zentradi arrives at Earth, identifying the Macross as belonging to their enemies. What ensues is a battle that will determine the fate of the future, seen through the eyes of civillian pilot turned military officer, Hikaru Ichijou. Music, love triangles, and missile spam ensue.

Notable for being the first entry in the Macross franchise and helping to solidify the popularity of the real robot subgenre. Also notable for starting the career of mechanical designer and anime creator Shoji Kawamori. In America, it's notable for being adapted, along with Super Dimension Cavalry Southern Cross and Genesis Climber Mospeada, into Robotech, one of the foundational series of American mecha fandom and a popular series in its own right. Sadly, this also created a legal mess with the entire Macross franchise that makes it difficult for the newer entries to be released outside of Japan. Yay for copyright law.

Macross spawned several sequels and spinoffs over the years, and was followed by a compilation movie called Super Dimension Fortress Macross: Do You Remember Love?, which the canon treats as an in-universe movie version of the events of the show.
